Premier League Accumulator Betting Matchday 1: How well did I do on my first acca of the season?
I picked the winner of six PL matches for matchday No 1. Did I get all six correct?
The Premier League season kicked off over the weekend, with 10 matches spread across four days. I forgot how much I missed the Premier League during the summer. Even though there was non-stop football to watch all summer long, including the UEFA Nations League, FIFA Women’s World Cup, and the various domestic leagues that run from spring to autumn, the Premier League is the competition I follow the most.
To start the new Premier League season, I placed a six-fold accumulator on a selection of Saturday’s fixtures. I staked just £1, with a return of £28.39. It was a modest wager on an acca.
If you aren’t familiar with accumulators, the bet is defined as: “An 'Accumulator' bet involves more than one selection on a bet, often consisting of four or more selections, which basically requires all selections to win. The stake and return from the first selection roll on to the next, until the final selection on the bet is settled.”
The idea behind an acca is a small stake can lead to a big win. But the more selections you add to the acca, the riskier it gets. Of course, a lot of football fans know exactly how an acca works, as they are ubiquitous with football betting.
My selections were:
Arsenal to defeat Nottingham Forest
Brighton to defeat Luton Town
Crystal Palace to defeat Sheffield United
Aston Villa to defeat Newcastle United
Bournemouth and West to both score
Everton and Fulham to combine for over 0.5 goals
In the end, I picked five of the six matches correctly. The only match I missed was the Newcastle United versus Aston Villa fixture. I was only given around £4.50 to cash out before the Newcastle/Aston Villa game. It wasn’t worth it, so I let the bet continue.
I really thought Villa could go to St James’ Park and pick up a win. I wasn’t sure Newcastle would start so well, and Aston Villa would be played off the park.
Villa still managed 16 shots, but the defence was torn apart, allowing 17 shots, with 13 of those shots hitting the target. Newcastle may be able to follow up their 2022-23 season, although I still think they will fall off somewhat once the Champions League begins.
Following the first weekend, I think betting against Luton Town will be a common trend this season. Although their first home match at Kenilworth Road may see them become inspired thanks to the atmosphere. However, the Hatters' first home game of the season, which was set to be played this weekend versus Burnley, has been postponed. The development work on Kenilworth Road will not be completed on time.
Sheffield United are another team that look good to bet against this season. The Blades are tipped to go back down to the Championship. Brighton, on the other hand, are a team I expect big things from again. They will likely be a regular on my accas, as will Arsenal and Man City.
If football betting is new to you, then might I suggest that you never wager on the team you support. It is a recipe for disaster, although I sometimes break this rule.
Matchday No 2 of the Premier League will take place on 18, 19, and 20 August. There are nine matches for this weekend, including:
Nottingham Forest v Sheffield United
Fulham v Brentford
Liverpool v Bournemouth
Wolves v Brighton
Tottenham v Man United
Man City v Newcastle United
Aston Villa v Everton
West Ham v Chelsea
Crystal Palace v Arsenal
There are some fantastic matches set for matchday No 2. I’ll pick six matches once more for this week’s acca and share the results next week.
